Best growth on deep, permeable soils with abundant moisture at mid- to high elevations. Commonly grown Western native at mid-elevation and coastal mountains. regions. Fine Christmas tree. Has fragrant bark and leaf. Native to Southwestern United States.
An Abies concolor in Yosemite National Park is registered as a California Big Tree. It measures 217 feet high, with a trunk circumference of 276 inches and a crown spread of 39 feet.
